BLURB:
Eighteen-year-old Penelope Green doesn't have any reason to believe her senior year will be anything but ordinary.
Boy was she wrong...
There's a new family in her small Martha's Vineyard community and they're about to flip her world upside down; none more so that the brooding, wide-shouldered Kane Whitmore.
Connected in ways she never dreamed possible, Penelope must trust Kane and her growing feelings for him as his family to guides her through her missing past and a world she never knew existed—a world she'd suddenly become the center of.
Learning she's a Guardian with the ability to heal she can handle. It's the dreams—both frightening and heart-wrenching—that nearly brings her to her knees. But when madman's vengeful plot puts her loved ones at risk, Penelope is willing to sacrifice anything to keep them safe...even her own life.
THE TEASE:
“What’s with him?” Kane asked quietly from where he sat next to me, pretending we were watching TV.
“I think he’s broken,” I whispered back, looking over at Dad who still had that lost sort of look on his face.
“What?”
“Well, after lunch we went for a walk to try and see if I could wrangle a little critter into assisting my healing studies.”
“And?”
“And we found a gull down by the water with a broken wing. Dad sort of watched me magically put it back together again.” The words tumbled out of my mouth like a confession.
“I see,” Kane said with a sage nod.
“You see? I broke my own father and the only thing you can say is ‘I see’?”
“Don’t worry about him.” Kane smiled gently at my disbelieving look. “Have you forgotten
you have a tool to gauge his reaction?”
Kane watched with amusement as realization slowly made its way across my face. How
could I have forgotten? I closed my eyes and pushed out my energy. Instantly, I picked up my dad’s confusion. But there was something else there too, like he was trying to solve a very complicated math problem.
“You dad has a very scientific mind. Comes in handy, I’m sure, for his line of work, but when explaining something he doesn’t understand and sees as supernatural it’s a hindrance. Give him time to work it out, compartmentalize it, and I’m sure he’ll come back swinging.”
“I know you’re talking about me,” Dad said without looking in our direction. “I may be old, but these ears still work just fine.”
“See, coming out swinging,” Kane whispered in my ear.
“Dad, you’re only in your forties. If your hearing was going out so soon I would have far more concerns than that of your already questionable mental health.” I laughed as he shot a pillow at my face without turning his eyes away from the scene outside the window.
“Watch it,” he said, laughter in his voice. “Or I’ll have to team up with Kane there to get you back.”
I turned to Kane in mock horror. “You wouldn’t dare!”
“I don’t know about that,” he answered with a wink. “It would be best to stay on his good side.”
I answered that with the pillow my dad had tossed. To his face.
“I like the way that boy thinks,” Dad said, standing to stretch the muscles in his back. “I’m going to see if your aunt and uncle want me to pick the girls up from school. Doesn’t seem right that they should have to make the trip again.”
“I’m sure they won’t mind.”
“I insist.” Dad finally turned in our direction. “Besides, it gets me away from you lovebirds. When I said that it was okay for you to date my daughter, I didn’t think that you would be doing so much of it in my presence.”
Kane threw his head back and laughed as my face turned crimson. One look at me, and Dad started laughing too.
“I told you I would get him in on it,” he said between chuckles. “But I didn’t think that it would be so easy.”
At my glare, Dad wisely went to the den to seek out Julius and Amelie.
“Sorry,” Kane said when I turned the look on him. “I didn’t know what he was up to at first but then, once I did, I couldn’t miss out on seeing you blush.”
I narrowed my eyes and his expression softened. He cupped my check, leaned in and kissed the tip of my nose. “Come on, you can’t be mad.”
“And why’s that?”
“Because I happen to think that your blushes are adorable.”
“You do realize how cheesy you sound right now, right?”
“Oh.”
“I didn’t say stop,” I said with a saucy smirk. “Go on telling me how adorable I am.”
Kane growled at me and silenced my laughter with a sweet kiss that turned into a little more than a sweet kiss so quickly it took both of us by surprise. It went on for a while before Kane summoned his superhuman willpower and began pulling back by degrees. After a moment, he ended the kiss entirely by resting his forehead against mine. My eyes were still closed and I was still half lost in his kiss when he spoke.
“Must I always be the responsible one?”
“Huh?”
“Your father will be walking through this room any minute now and you were just about
ready to let me ravish you on the couch.”
I giggled. A kiss like that would addle any girl’s brain. “Who says ravish anymore?”
“Penelope.”
“Kane.”
He sighed and his mint-scented breath across my lips made me want to kiss him some more.
“Oh no, you don’t,” Kane said, putting some distance between us. “I’m already in deep
water with your dad. I’m not about to pile on more trouble.”
“I suppose you’re right.” I couldn’t help the pout that formed on my lips. “Can’t blame a girl for trying.”
“Get over here,” Kane said with a sigh, then tucked me under his arm while he searched for
something on the television. “And don’t pout. It’ll only get us into trouble.”
Not knowing what he meant I looked up at him. The heated look he shot me was answer enough and I quickly wiped the pout off my face. It really wouldn’t be a good idea for Dad to walk in on us fulfilling those promises that were in Kane’s eyes. He’d lock me away in my room until I was thirty.
